Abstract
INDIRECT evidence indicates that the 2-hydroxyl group of the ribose moiety may play an important part in determining the structural properties of nucleic acids in solution. The formation and stability of helical structures formed by the aggregation of 5-guanylic acid1, by single stranded oligonucleotides24, homopolymers5 and by double stranded structures6 depend on the presence or absence of 2-OH. All these results were explained by the formation of a hydrogen bond in which the 2-OH group is interacting either with the neighbouring base5 or with the phosphate oxygen12.
